Loss

Hey guys, after reading a post from another author, Stacey Troilo, yesterday https://storyempire.com/2017/10/04/novelists-writing-shorts/, I decided to mosey on over to WP The Daily Post, and take a look at today’s writing prompt. It’s the one word “Denial”. Please don’t judge me harshly. I’m making a start, okay; and I want to keep it short. Anyway, here goes.

Young African American couple in a serious chat

“Deny, deny, deny all you want, but I know you did it. Remember you said that if you could, you’d make it go away.

“Why would you do that?” I cried. “It was the only thing that gave my lonely days meaning.”

By now I was shrieking from anxiety and sadness.

He just looked at me. His gaze was inscrutable and I thought he might sympathize with me until he spoke.

“Maybe you did it. Maybe you’re the one who’s in denial,” he said in a voice that was more questioning than accusatory.

“Let’s look at the facts, shall we?”

He used his long, slender fingers to tick off points.

“Number one—did you ever let it in?

Number two—did you ever touch it? Stroke it?

Three—did you give it a name?”

He was right. I’d never taken possession. Never extended myself. Never reciprocated or returned the affection so earnestly given. Shame draped its heavy cloak around me and guilt made me lift my eyes up to his.

“So what do I do?” I asked.

“It’s too late,” he said. “It’s gone.”

  1. You’re ahead of me, Linda. I want to play with the daily prompts too but haven’t gotten around to them yet.
There is no wrong when you’re having creative fun.
Congrats on flexing your writing muscle. Awesome!

  2. That was a very good point and surprise to the beginning of accusing. Loved your first try.
