WORDS MATTER

“Non-fiction is about reality. Fiction is about truth.”—S.J. Rozan, bestselling author of the Lydia Chin/Bill Smith Mysteries series

“I think the subject matter of the book’s specific mystery is important in today’s mainstream media, too, because sex trafficking of young girls is something that is overlooked at an unprecedented rate.”–ReadersView

What a pleasure to welcome esteemed author Randy Overbeck to tell us why words matter.

Randy Overbeck

Our words matter. They can wound or heal, scold or soothe, redeem or condemn, enlighten or obscure.

So, when I turned my words loose on the world in my novel, CRIMSON AT CAPE MAY, I wanted to make sure I used my sentences and paragraphs for the right reasons. I realize most readers come to my novels in search of a little mystery or a great beach read or even a bit of romance. But I also want readers, when they finish the last page, to feel a little better informed and maybe even have their conscience tweaked a bit.

When I wrote CRIMSON AT CAPE MAY, I strove to create a compelling ghost story/mystery set in a captivating town that readers would enjoy. The locale, surrounded by the unique Victorian mansions and bed-and-breakfasts beside a stunning stretch of white sand beach, makes a great setting for my little literary foray into romance and mystery. But the location—at the end of the Garden State Turnpike and a short distance from the Northeast shipping network—allowed me to use my fiction to also tell a truth about a serious social issue.

In fact, I chose the beauty and charm of this picturesque small town as a deliberate contrast to the ugly world of human trafficking, festering not very far from the city limits. In the story, Darrell, my hero, learns the cold-case murder mystery he’s trying to solve is tied to the larger crimes of prostitution and human trafficking. As he sifts through the clues to the death of the “Haunted Bride,” he comes face-to-face with this ugly world, allowing me to use my fictional story to expose this very real scourge on humanity.

For example, he is stunned to learn that a teen runaway gets sucked into human trafficking networks every ninety minutes in the U.S., an issue that becomes personal as he’s searching for the missing teen sister of one of his students.

As a teacher and coach, Darrell is repulsed to discover that an astounding one million children are caught in human trafficking around the world. One million! And he is even more astounded that he—like most of us—knew so little about this staggering exploitation of others, occurring all around us.

Don’t get the wrong idea. The novel is no white paper on sex trafficking. In fact, based on reviews on Amazon and Goodreads, readers love the romance, mystery, suspense and even the ghost story of the novel. But my hope is readers, when they close the book, will come away  entertained and perhaps a little more enlightened about this critical social problem.

BLOOD ON THE CHESAPEAKE

Wilshire, Maryland seems like the perfect shore town on the Chesapeake Bay—quiet, scenic, charming—and promises Darrell Henshaw a new start in life and a second chance at love. That is, until he learns the town hides an ugly secret. A thirty-year-old murder in the high school. And a frightening ghost stalking his new office. Burned by an earlier encounter with the spirit world—with the OCD scars to prove it—he does NOT want to get involved. But when the desperate ghost hounds him, Darrell concedes. Assisted by his new love, he follows a trail that leads to the civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and even the Klu Klux Klan. Then, when two locals who try to help are murdered, Darrell is forced to decide if he’s willing to risk his life—and the life of the woman he loves—to expose the killers of a young man he never knew.

BLURB—CRIMSON AT CAPE MAY

No matter how far you run, you can never really escape a haunted past.

Darrell Henshaw—teacher, coach, and paranormal sensitive—learned this lesson the hard way. With his job gone and few options, he heads for Cape May to coach a summer football camp. The resort town, with gorgeous beaches, rich history and famous Victorian mansions, might just be the getaway he needs. Only, no one told him Cape May is the most haunted seaport on the East Coast. One resident ghost, the Haunted Bride, stalks Darrell, begging for his help.

He can’t refuse.

Joining forces with Cassie, a street-wise teen and another sensitive, he investigates the bride’s death and discovers her murder is connected to a far greater horror. But can Darrell and Cassie expose those behind the crimes before they end up being the killer’s next victims?

  1. Randy, its good that you are shedding some light on sex trafficking because it is not talked about much around my circle of friends. It’s like we are oblivious to it. I was eating in a restaurant once and I think I saw something close to what you are talking about. There was a white male with two what looked like underage teenage black girls. They looked very suspicious to me, but because I didn’t follow my gut feeling, I did nothing about it. We don’t know much about it except that it’s somebody else’s problem.

I can appreciate becoming more informed of the problem. Thank you.

    1. Sex trafficking is so scarily serious in this country and the world. I’m sorry that such depravity exists and focuses primarily on our children. Thanks for reading and commenting, Shirley. Best of luck to Randy.

  2. Hi, Linda! Thanks for hosting this compelling post on your lovely website.

Randy, I’ve read the first two books in this series, one right after the other, and I have the new one on pre-order. I’m chomping at the bit for its release. You know what you’re talking about when you say words matter. You make every one of your words count, and as entertaining as the stories are, the underlying message in each is a matter of concern for all of us. Superb writing! I lost sleep reading them, and didn’t miss it.

    1. When I heard, years ago at a writing conference. S J Rozen speak the words: “Non-fiction is about reality; fiction is about truth” it struck me then and I’ve never forgotten this message. That’s why I work so hard to incorporate some hard truths in my fiction.
