Recently I read and reviewed the Kindle Edition of  Mathiya Adams’ novel, “The Avid Angler: The Hotdog Detective” and today I wanted to share that review here. M. Adams is a member of a major author’s support network, Rave Reviews Book Club, of which author Nonnie Jules is founding president.

I enjoy a good detective story and I was unfamiliar with the genre cozies, so I was excited to read this one. The main character is Mark MacFarland, a former Denver Police Detective who, due to extenuating circumstances, is now selling hotdogs from a vending cart outside City Hall.

MacFarland, known simply as Mac, is approached by a lawyer seeking help to solve a case concerning a woman accused of murder. Mac uses his homeless buddy Rufus and his other homeless friends to gather evidence. Eventually, the investigation leads Mac to Norris Peterson, the man who caused Mac’s downfall.

The inclusion of homeless characters, is nothing short of a Dickens (Oliver Twist-y) technique that I greatly admired. You’ll enjoy the leader of the tight-knit homeless network, Lord Bozworth. He speaks with a British accent and it’s rumored that he even attended Oxford. Author Adams uses Bozworth to galvanize his people to help Mac save the innocent woman and vindicate himself.

I’m excited to see greater involvement of Mac’s “invisible friends” in future ‘Hotdog Detective’ stories. Going forward, I’d also like to learn more about the friendship between Mac and his former room(street)mate, Rufus. The book took a minute to build to suspense, but I’ve learned that this is necessary when you’re prepping a series. By the time Author Adams got to the middle, I couldn’t put it down.

A lot of good stuff here to keep the series going! I recommend “The Avid Angler: The Hotdog Detective”.
